Sarah Muscella, a junior biology major, Professor Straub in the center, and Lydia Sivello a senior biology major discuss the many and various insects collected in their 5 minute sweep. Recently Professor Corey Straub of nearby Ursinus College in Collegevill, Pa was given permission to monitory Northern Star Farms' alfalfa and orchard grass fields of insect activity. Professor Straub teaches a course on Entomology( the study of insects) at the 4 year Liberal Arts College. Among several question he and his students will endeavor to answer both in the field and in the laboratory are:

  • Does planting a mixture of crops reduce pest numbers compared to the planting of just one crop
  • What role to insect predators have in controlling pests?
  • Identify both the insect and ground predators found in the farms' hay fields.
